About the workshops

If you have ever wanted to try your hand at the timeless art of oil painting and simply don't know where to start, my painting workshops will help unleash your creativity.

I will guide you step by step to create an expressive landscape oil painting.

My classes are held in North Devon and cover basic traditional techniques and methods, whilst helping you if you feel unsure, anxious or precious about your work.

Sample class content: composition ideas, how to start using a sketch and ground, how to create depth with tone, working from dark to light, muted vs saturated colours, impasto mark marking, letting go of fear and having fun!

Oil paint colours

  • Titanium White (I use Alkyd Titanium White to speed up drying time)

  • Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Hue Light (I use Cadmium Hues as they are less toxic)

  • Cadmium Yellow Hue or Permanent Yellow Deep

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Cerulean Blue

  • Phthalo Blue

  • Cadmium Red Hue or Scarlet (I use Cadmium Hues as they are less toxic)

  • Alizarin Crimson

  • Buff titanium

If you are just starting out I recommend purchasing this set of oil paints from Cass Art as it has warm and cool versions of each primary colour.

Other colours I find useful:

  • Yellow Ochre

  • Raw Umber

  • Naples Orange

  • Pale Rose Blush

  • Permanent Magenta

  • Colbalt Blue

  • Turquoise

  • Sap Green

  • Paynes Grey

Mediums and solvents

  • Low odour white spirit (or Zest It or Gamsol. Please not Turpentine as the fumes are really bad!)

  • Liquin

Brushes and Palette Knives

  • Palette knife for mixing colours. If purchasing a new palette knife I prefer large tapered knives.

  • 2 large house brushes (from a DIY store is fine)

  • 1 or two fan brushes

  • A selection of firm bristle or hogs hair brushes, for oil painting. For example; 2 small brushes for fine detail, 2 medium round brushes and 2 medium flat brushes

Surface

  • Stretched canvas or canvas board approx. 16 x 12 inches

Other

  • Tear-off palette (available from The Works)

  • Two empty jam jars with lids for the white spirit

  • An old rag for wiping away paint

  • Kitchen roll or blue roll for cleaning and drying palette knife and brushes

  • HB or 2B pencil

  • 30cm ruler

  • A packed lunch if attending a whole day workshop
